This synopsis was then followed by a chapter breakdown. Although the eventual order of the chapters was different when we actually came to write the book, the essence was the same and the publisher was able to see that there would be enough material for a whole book and that it wouldn't simply be one adventure listed after another. We showed that the reader would see into Donya's past and grow to understand why she took the risks she did and what had caused her to take up such a dangerous life at the same time as being caught up in the stake-outs, snatches and car chases across the desert. For the chapter breakdown I reverted to the third person.
Chapter Breakdown
CHAPTER ONE. OUT OF IRAQ.
The story opens with the dramatic escape from Iraq with Donya's little nephew. The reader is immediately caught by the tension and the excitement of getting the child across the Iraqi border and out of Jordan to England. Donya then explains how she's spent the previous three weeks in the blistering heat of Iraq teaching the five-year-old boy how to behave as if he is her son, changing his appearance to fit the passport photograph and planning the actual escape. By the time they arrive back at Heathrow the reader is hooked on the excitement and wants to know more about Donya herself and how she came to be on such a dangerous mission.
CHAPTER TWO. A MOTHER'S PLEA.
Going back a couple of years, Donya explains how she met Mary at a bus stop in Queensway and realised that she had to do something to help. She tells how she found herself volunteering to go into Libya and save the child for her new friend, and describes the desperation and helplessness which women like Mary feel when their children are taken away from them. She then takes the reader on the first rescue mission, to get Leila back from Libya, hooking them once more on the excitement of the long trip back to safety via Algeria and Morocco.
CHAPTER THREE. BECOMING A MUSLIM,
In this chapter Donya describes how she came to be converted to the Muslim religion at the age of 16. She gives a moving account of her own troubled childhood and how she found an escape through the family of her first boyfriend in Jordan. She paints a vivid picture of what it was like for a 15-year-old English girl to find herself part of a Muslim family and what it was about the lifestyle and the religion that attracted her.
CHAPTER FOUR. BECOMING THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL
After rescuing Leila, word spreads around the West London Muslim community that Donya is someone who can help mothers in distress. In this chapter she tells of the many women who approached her asking for help, explaining the pattern which started to emerge for her from their stories; how all the women had had similar experiences. In describing how these situations arise, she'll be able to help other women in mixed
