Chapter Seven

Louisa couldn’t sleep without Barnaby. She tried and tried until even the terror of crossing the dark landing seemed worth the risk to rescue him.

The door to her uncle and aunt’s room was ajar and their voices, especially Aunt Stella’s, drifted out.

“It’s not a suitable house for children. I shan’t feel easy until they’ve gone,” she was saying.

“But the tragedy happened long ago,” said Uncle Richard.

“The house hasn’t forgotten.”
