Comparing the Good and Bad Methods Sections

The content of both Methods sections above is much the same, since both have the four segments of description (Specimen Preparation), preparation (Implant Configurations), testing (Mechanical Testing), and analysis (Data Analysis). Nevertheless, there are differences in the amount of detailing that would make the first one acceptable by the editor of a scientific journal, while the second one would need to be improved.

The good Methods section provides precedent from the literature in several places to justify its approach, always explains abbreviations upon first appearance unless widely known to the typical readership, and provides much detail regarding all parameters, techniques, and materials used.

The bad Methods section does not provide the following items: details about the inclusion/exclusion criteria for the specimens, precedent from the literature in several places where it could have done so, dimensions and test parameter values in several places, names of manufacturers for some of the devices used, and reasons for using a 100 N load during tests. It also does not provide any explanation for the abbreviations, merely assuming that the reader is familiar with all of them, which may not be the case.
