What has just been said about unusually short sentences and paragraphs may also be said about chapters. In a long novel of, say, twenty-five chapters averaging about twenty pages each, a chapter that is only five to ten pages long will stand out in the reader’s mind. Since that is so, the author may only use the device of a dramatically short chapter perhaps once in a book. Ordinarily, that chapter would be the pivotal chapter—in which the plot suddenly takes the major twist that leads straight to the climax. A case might also be made for the emphasis inherent in an unusually long chapter. My fear is that all would be lost in the length. In my experience, shorter is better; longer is merely longer.
