Q. Where did this idea of a personal, or mission, statement come from?

A. Affirmations of intent are words that are used to articulate one’s mission. In business, it originates from a management guru by the name of W. Edwards Deming, who transformed the Japanese automobile industry in the 1950s with his theory of quality management. Small Japanese cars were suddenly outselling and outperforming trusty American Buicks and Fords. Deming insisted that every corporation (or any entity) have a mission statement and, more important, that every employee know it.
