1980—1988: From Newsletter to Scholarly Journal

When Elizabeth Flynn became editor in 1983, she made a number a major changes in the format of Reader. First, she changed the title from Reader: a newsletter of reader-oriented criticism and teaching to the more formal Reader: Essays in Reader-Oriented Theory, Criticism, and Pedagogy. This decision, as well as others, Flynn described in "A Note from the Editor," a preface that was to become a regular feature in subsequent issues:

I conceive of Reader then, as continuing to provide an "alternative" to other journals: it is relatively inexpensive ... and it still provides a forum for discussion of reader-oriented issues. But it will do so in a somewhat different way. Essays will be longer (12-15 double-spaced pages) and more formal; issues will have an interdisciplinary emphasis; and there will be a deliberate attempt to include the perspectives of "outsiders," i.e., those who would not consider themselves to be part of the reader-response community. (Flynn, 1983, p. ii)
