Perhaps her experience of working patterns in Dundee was particular to the industrial patterns in that city at the time but another female MP, Mavis Tate (Conservative MP for Willesden West), representing a constituency from a quite different part of the country, was also concerned about the unequal treatment of married women:The whole system of English law has been built up on the assumption that a person is innocent of any crime whatsoever until proved guilty; but if this Clause were ever to be accepted it means that in future all married women are to be considered malingerers and cheats until they have definitely proved that they are not. There is no reason why a genuinely employed married woman should be put into a position where she has to prove herself neither a liar nor a cheat. (Mavis Tate, Hansard 21/6/32 col 945)
