Peter and I made a date to meet the day after his return to Boston from a week's vacation in Florida. He called that morning to confirm. It was the middle of January and snow was in the forecast. Peter is thirty-seven years old. He tested positive for HIV some years back and got sick for the first time about a year ago after he broke away from a sixteen-year relationship. He was hospitalized with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and also suffered from viral meningitis. He was laid off from his corporate job and since then has held down jobs as a temp, a receptionist and, more recently, as a sales associate for Eddie Bauer.

I came out when I was nineteen years old. I was engaged to be married. I hadn't even masturbated before. I met this guy through a friend at work. We spent a lot of time together for about a week and then we got together one night. I made the first move to touch him, which surprised him, but he made the first move to be sexual. It was two-thirty a.m. We spent the night together and the next morning he made me memorize his phone number because I wouldn't write it down. This was the second time I'd had sex. So once or twice a year I'd be a bottom. We spent sixteen years together and we broke up about a year ago.
