Early morning light in mid-July creates unique patterns of illumination and shadowplay. The translucency of the grassy matrix below the oaks is dramatically apparent, while sunlight accentuates the lavender-purple spikes of blazing star (Liatris spicata) and the ivory-white flower clusters of rattlesnake master (Eryngium yuccifolium).

In July, blazing star and rattlesnake master are still taller than many of the grasses.

By late autumn, flower spikes of the blazing star have turned to tawny seedheads.
