I watched her as she ran through the field of wildflowers with some strewn through her hair. I liked how she wove them together making a whimsical tiara to wear on her head. She wore jeans, loose and worn with age as she pivoted and continued to run, throwing a ball so our pet golden retriever, Burger, could fly after it. I didnât know why, but I found this moment oddly one of the most peaceful ones of my entire life.
True to their word, the Others hadnât returned to bother us. They mustâve been watching, though, for sometimes I felt a slight sense of being studied from afar. Iâd pause, peer around and wait to encounter the familiar hair raising sensation they usually caused me. But, the feeling always passed and the world continued to go about its business as if nothing happened. As if the strange and unusual beings who had tried to kill me for decades didnât exist and were a figment of imagination. A story told to frighten the children in the night.
But I knew better. Iâd had centuries to hone my senses and knew if I was being watched.
I hoped they never decided to rescind our deal, for the happiness I had now couldnât and shouldnât feel temporary.
Iâd make sure of it. Iâd die for it.
âDo you think theyâll come back for you?â Ruby asked as we both laid on the grasses and stared up at the cloudless sky. Iâd shake my head and let her snuggle into my chest. It felt right, safe and calm next to her. I loved the way she smelled, the sound of her voice, and her face. Never in a thousand years had I ever thought Iâd find someone like her to spend the rest of my life with. Who knew what eternity could bring?
âNo. Well I hope not. The Others are a strange race.â
She turned her head and her pretty blue eyes flickered back and forth studying mine. I leaned over to kiss her lips, feeling their softness respond to me. Letting our lips press against each other and our tongues explore one anotherâs mouth, we sighed in harmony from the tingling it left us which sped up our immortal hearts and made the world disappear.
When we came up for air, I found her eyes gleaming and nothing in this world Iâd ever seen compared to the happiness it gave me now.
âI hope I never meet them again.â She leaned on my chest and her eyes stared off into the distance. âThank you for saving me. I never thought Iâd meet someone that can make me feel the way you do. Iâm glad theyâll leave you alone too now. Youâd think theyâd realize that theyâre the anomaly, not us, not anyone else. Killing is not normal.â
I shrugged and closed my eyes, stroking her soft blonde hair. âIf they come, theyâll come. Iâll be ready, no matter what.â
She grinned happily and closed her eyes.
âWhen we finish our degrees, where do
