Only this is not the whole truth. For example, for athletes with a very high proportion of muscles, these values are no longer valid. Or suppose you are at normal weight, but not physically active and have high levels of fat. Then are these values still correct?
Not really: While BMI provides a rough evaluation of whether our weight is within an acceptable range, it does not inform us of our risk of acquiring diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Not only the amount of fat should be considered, but also the distribution of fat. Those who have an “apple figure” (fat belly) are at greater risk than those with a “pear figure” (fat around the hips and thighs). In women, waist circumference should be below 31 inches and in men below 37 inches.
