Guidelines for Treatment of HIV

Several guidelines are available regarding HIV-1 infected adults in developed countries with access to all or most of the drugs and laboratory tests. In United States of America, both International AIDS Society-USA (IAS-USA) [ 89 ] and US government’s Department of Health and Human Services [US DHSS] [ 90 ] guidelines are followed. In Europe, European AIDS Clinical Society guidelines are available [ 91 ].

The current US DHSS guidelines (published 8.4.2015) for starting HAART states that:

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is recommended for all HIV infected individuals to reduce the risk of disease progression.

ART also is recommended for HIV infected individuals for the prevention of transmission of HIV.

Patients starting ART should be willing and able to commit to treatment and understand the benefits and risks of therapy and the importance of adherence. Patients may choose to postpone therapy, and providers on a case-to case basis may elect therapy on the basis of clinical and or psychological factors.
