Chapter Seven

As the crazy beat of his heart reduced, Julien turned his attention to the woman in front of him. Her again. What was the chance of him running into the woman so soon again after their earlier meeting? He sure as hell had not expected her to be present when he’d gone looking for his children. When he’d entered the kitchen to get himself a drink of water to replenish, Molly had found him, and with red-rimmed eyes reported she had lost the children. She hadn’t known where to look but understanding their fascination with the lake, Julien had thought to look there immediately. He had no idea how long they had been there for though and had been terrified he would be too late. He had broken into a dead run when he’d heard Pippa’s cry of distress.

His mouth opened to tell her thanks when she rose to her feet but the words stuck in his throat. She was thoroughly wet, the material of her gown sticking to her body like a second skin. He could only imagine if she had been wearing one of those hundred-layered dressed the ladies of the ton fancied, she would have been dragged under with Pippa in the lake. But, her gown was a simple dress without the frippery and elaborate detailed. The result had a devastating effect on him.

She was quite slender in frame, unlike Julien’s first wife who had curves in all the places where it mattered. The woman before him had no such curve to her features. The wet gown stuck to her chest but Julien could not understand how seeing the small size of her breasts outlined affected him so. Perhaps because of their small size they were more evident beneath the wet gown. Their points were so puckered to the material that all the blood drained from his head.

He did not mean to stare. He truly did not. Given the frown on her face, she had no idea why he stared. She followed her gaze and when she discovered what held his fascination, she gasped in outrage and crossed her hands about her chest. That snapped him to attention and returned the blood flow to almost normal levels.

“Here, put this on,” he mumbled, his face aflame because he should have done this as the gentlemanly thing instead of staring at her. How could he have treated her this way, as though she was nothing but a common loose woman? Granted many of the female servants were but this was the woman who had saved his daughter’s life. She deserved some amount of respect from him. “Pardon me for—”

“Will she be okay?” the woman asked on a rush as though she didn’t want to hear the rest of what was coming out of her mouth. She allowed him to hold his jacket for her and she slipped her arms inside and pulled the material close to her body for warmth. He caught her dragging in his scent before she realized what she did and her face burned in embarrassment.
