After 15 years in Hawaii, Darren’s health took a turn for the worse. His lungs grew weak and he developed bladder issues, which required him to travel to UCLA for a full bladder reconstruction to remove five large bladder stones and fix damage that accumulated over the past decade. He returned to Maui four months after the surgery, but soon developed an abdominal blockage which required another surgery. Pneumonia later sprouted from air that was too moist for his aging body, and Darren was advised to retreat to a drier environment.

With his team of caregivers, Darren moved to Palm Springs.

When I went to see him at his home, it took a half hour for his caregiver to get him ready. He came out in his wheelchair with shorts and no shirt, and a tan that only years in Hawaii could perfect.

“Palm Springs makes sense for me because I am not too far from UCLA, which has one of the best hospitals around. I miss the water though.”

Moving back to the mainland proved beneficial for his art, as well. Darren was the featured artist at the monthly Los Angeles Art Walk in downtown L.A. and sales increased. He put 27 pieces in Giada’s new restaurant in the Cromwell hotel in Las Vegas and individual commission requests came in for pieces of certain sizes.

As for his health, with the move to a drier climate, the pneumonia cleared up, but, because of the nature of his injuries, Darren has developed further stomach issues and may need more operations. He is on medication for urology problems and deals with rotating clammy or sweaty skin on a regular basis, although a recent drug has helped reduce the swings. His bladder may need another procedure.

Regardless of his health ailments, Darren is happy and he continues to paint. He can paint huge paintings or small ones. His studio drawers are filled with them. They are all beautiful. If I could afford them all, I would own one of each.

Darren has beaten Goliath; he has won. And while there are days that he struggles more than others—and yes, he does get depressed sometimes—he continues to paint.

He paints his dreams, his love of nature, and he puts his heart on paper.

Darren has shifted to a life of meaning and purpose and has been able to spread his beautiful creations throughout the world. I am honored to know Darren and to share his story.
