Songs from Harry and Joyce Roberson

The first song included here, “Kidder Cole,” was written by Judge Felix Alley, a superior court judge of North Carolina, at the age of sixteen. Alley was born near Whiteside Mountain in 1873. His mother was Sarah Norton, the first white child born in Whiteside Cove. The following quotation concerning “Kidder Cole” was obtained by [student] David [Wilson] from a book, which was authored by Judge Alley.

The three other songs [student] Mike [Cook] and David got for us follow the Alley ballad.

In order to satisfy hundreds of people writing me about my banjo ballad, “Kidder Cole,” I will tell the story. The ballad speaks for itself and adheres closely to the facts. The ballad has been sung for many years. It is sung and played wherever mountain melodies are used.

The ballad and its origin have often appeared in various newspapers and magazines. The ballad itself has been included in several editions of Folk Songs.

Let it be here understood that all this has been without my knowledge. Like all songs that have been handed down by word of mouth, many words have been changed.

Let me say that Charley Wright, whose name appears in the ballad, is the same man who performed the heroic and miraculous feat of rescuing Baty from the brink of a two-thousand-foot precipice on Whiteside Mountain.
