Master Ferribolt’s prodding had finally gotten the best of him.

“Jason,” he had always said. “I strongly recommend you study Ancient Nezmythian outside of my home. You’ve grown surprisingly proficient in the three months we’ve studied together, but your vocabulary is still lacking. That should be accomplished through your own studies.”

Jason always met the remark with a huff, but you can only turn down the Chief Patriarch’s advice so many times before you feel like you’re flat-out sinning. He knew how to get to the city library, so directions weren’t necessary.

“I beg your pardon?”

The librarian pulled her rectangular reading spectacles down to the tip of her nose and looked hard at Jason. Her thin, wrinkly lips were pursed in curiosity.

“I’d like to get to the Ancient Nezmythian section, please,” Jason repeated.

“You are… studying the Ancient Tongue?” the librarian scanned Jason’s messy garbs skeptically.

Jason nodded. “Yes, ma’am. For nearly five months now.”

The librarian pulled anxiously at the shoulders of her pale dress and her eyes darted to her desk. She tapped her hair bun squeamishly with her palm, then immediately began to rummage through the drawers below, muttering to herself, “If I can find that key… ah! Here it is.”

Her hand reappeared with an old-fashioned metal key that was partly caked with rust. Jason looked at it oddly and took it from the librarian’s outstretched hand. She looked at Jason closely, “The books with the Ancient Language are on the top floor inside the gated region. None of the books there are available for lending. Remember to bring the key back when you are finished.”

Jason nodded and bid his thanks as he walked into the library. Outside, it appeared to be a crusty old building that hadn’t been refurbished in many years, but once he stepped inside, the smell of pages upon pages of old paper and ink was almost thick enough to taste.

There weren’t any walls—every crevice, nook, and cranny was covered with bookcases stuffed to full capacity. Tables, oil lamps and chairs were plentiful and a few of them were filled with casual readers or small study groups as they hunched over pages.

Shelves jutted out of the wall to create small hallways and sections. A balcony wrapped around three fourths of the massive hall and could be accessed by a few flights of stairs. Jason’s eyes darted from bookshelf to bookshelf, corner to corner. He silently marveled at the centuries of records that were kept in this very hall.

Jason located a flight of stairs and started to climb. The wooden steps creaked as his body came down upon them. He climbed higher and higher until he reached the balcony, which he discovered held more bookshelves. He briefly scanned the area, but didn’t see any gated door. The spirit of exploration moved him forward.

As he made his way across the first side of the balcony, he loosely examined some book titles that stuck out to him on the shelves. He had to have been in the history
