DIPLOMAT GOES HOME

Ionescu returned to Romania three days after the accident. The Romanian embassy’s economic counsellor, Alexandru Nicolae Coseru, told The Straits Times that his colleague had returned home as he was ill and suffering from diabetes but didn’t have any idea when he was planning to return.

The embassy car’s regular driver, however, was still in Singapore. The Romanian declined to be named and said that he last saw Ionescu on 18 December. “He just told me that he was sick and needed to go home,” he said.

He also said that Ionescu, 49, had called him from Romania on 28 December and told him that there were “problems in the embassy” which concerned “administration and financial issues”.

The driver also served as the embassy’s caretaker and lived at the embassy’s premises on Jalan Harom Setangkai with his wife, a Romanian too. However, even though Ionescu had earlier said that he was with his driver when he discovered that the car had gone missing around 3am that fateful day, the driver claimed that he was sleeping in his room at that time and only knew about the missing car when Ionescu rang him and told him about it.
