Fully leading the leadership team

Unless the organisation is in a start-up phase, all expatriate leaders will inherit a leadership team that existed before their arrival. Taking time to understand each individual, their capability and how the overall team works is an important part of leadership. Without an effective leadership team, the organisation cannot be effective. Organisational culture is hugely influenced by the culture created by and amongst the leadership team in how they work together. Studies from international organisations such as Human Synergistics and Gallup suggest organisational culture is influenced up to 80 per cent by the impact of the leadership team.

Irrespective of how successful a team was previously, it will always start again when a new leader arrives. The team will slow down to the level of the new leader and wait for the leader to take charge and help set a new direction. Therefore, the leader needs to follow a process, at the outset conduct a ‘new leader assimilation’ exercise and then move on to use the ‘5Q process’ (both outlined in later chapters) to help guide the team towards high performance.
