The boardinghouse where Lincoln died, shown in the middle of this early-1900s image, was built in 1849 by William Petersen, a German tailor. It was a three-story building with a basement slightly below street level. Since the house was larger than his family required, Petersen rented extra rooms to lodgers. As many as 21 people lived there at any given time during the Civil War years. (LOC.)

Petersen and his wife both died in 1871. Their heirs auctioned off the furniture from the room where Lincoln died and later sold the house to Louis Schade for $4,500. Schade used the building as a home and office for his newspaper, the Washington Sentinel. Although it was unmarked, tourists often knocked at the door asking to see the death room. In 1883, a marble tablet was affixed to the house, identifying its place in history. (LOC.)
