The next day, Brian paced the living room waiting for Adele to come down. He’d heard her in the kitchen while he’d been on the phone with Sera and Jace, tracking down information on Richard Overstreet, the man who had assaulted Adele when she was in college.

Yesterday, as he’d listened to her telling him about her past, it had taken all his willpower not to fold her into his arms and promise she’d never suffer like that again. It hurt to think she blamed herself for the horrible actions of someone else. He didn’t know how to help her or even if it was his place to do so. But, God willing, he could discover if the danger threatening her life came from her past.

“Good morning.” Adele descended the stairs wearing black jeans and an emerald-green, long-sleeved shirt. It was a fabulous choice for her. The morning sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows sparkled on her fiery hair. She’d clipped back the sides of her hair, letting the ends rest against her shoulders.

“Morning.” His voice came out husky and low. He cleared his throat. “I have an address.”

She cocked her head. “For?”

He gave her a sheepish grin. His mouth was moving faster than his brain. “Sorry. It turns out Richard Overstreet’s mother lives in Austin, and Sera found a Trevor Overstreet in the DMV records,” Brian said. “We’ll visit her and see if she can give us any useful information.”

“You can’t honestly believe after all this time Richard’s family is coming after me? Why would they do that?”

“Because you’re the only obstacle standing in the way of him gaining parole.”
