3.3 Dark Moments: Will You Act?

We always watch rookies, especially their response to their first fight, or high-risk situation. Some run to it. Some run away. Some freeze. Until that first fight, we don’t know what the rookie will do. Neither does the rookie. I have supervised a tiny, single mom with no experience in this field, and no martial arts training, who jumped on a huge inmate to stop a fight. When the inmate threw her across the room, she jumped on him again. In the same week, a 6'4" former marine was verbally challenged by an inmate. The former marine ran and hid.

We don’t know, and we haven’t found anything that reliably predicts, who will run towards danger and who will run away. I’ve seen martial arts champions freeze; big, buff athletes cower; and tiny nerds turn into tigers. We can’t tell, so we watch.

For some, it is empowering.
