‘If anyone helps you then you’re a failure’

Youth homelessness, identity and relationships in late modernity

David Farrugia and Juliet Watson

How do young people who are experiencing homelessness construct identities and manage relationships?

The continued existence of homelessness amongst young people raises important questions about the nature of contemporary inequalities in societies such as Australia. Understanding the processes through which young people experiencing homelessness construct their identities provides insight into the consequences of these inequalities in young people’s lives. I think this is important work that contributes to a socially engaged and ethically driven youth research enterprise. It is vital that the experiences of the most marginalised and disadvantaged young people are known and understood if society is to come to terms with the inequalities that continue to shape the lives of Australian young people.
