Points create a connection between progression in the game and extrinsic rewards. Many gamified systems offer some real-world prizes for reaching certain levels or for redeeming virtual points: 1,000 points gets you a set of steak knives and 1,000,000 points gets you a round-trip ticket to Tahiti. Club Psych takes this approach, but it’s common in all manner of marketing and promotional devices that have been used for years.
Points provide feedback. Explicit and frequent feedback is a key element in most good game design, and points provide feedback quickly and easily. Points are among the most granular of feedback mechanisms. Each point gives the user a tiny bit of feedback, saying that he or she is doing well and progressing in the game.
