RECOMMENDATIONS

Use preservative-free eye drops for lubrication.

If you have dry eyes, contact your eye doctor before changing your diet. In addition to your specific eye condition, medical history, prescription medication, and allergies all need to be taken into account.

Use humidifiers in your home. This is especially important if you live in a dry area or at high altitude.

Wear wraparound sun goggles outdoors. Sunglasses (or even clear goggles) with side shields can help to reduce the evaporation of moisture from the eye by as much as 40 percent.

Blink! When you blink, you squeeze out tears from glands in your eyelids. Waiting twenty to thirty seconds between blinks may cause the tear film to break, which can lead to dehydration of the surface of the eye. We normally blink about twenty times a minute.

Quit smoking. Cigarette smoke causes dry spots to develop on the surface of the eye 40-percent faster than when the lids are held open.

Avoid smog and fumes. Smog and fumes not only cause dry and irritated eyes, they also inactivate the enzyme that acts as an antibacterial agent in the tear fluid.

If you use a computer, place the monitor so that your eyes aim downward when you look at it. This will allow you to keep your eyes partially closed, reducing the surface area of the eye exposed to air.

Reduce, replace, or avoid eye makeup. Eye makeup has been shown to thin the oily layer of the tear film, which keeps the eye from becoming dehydrated. It can harbor bacteria and should be replaced frequently. Gentle removal of all eye makeup every night is essential.

Check your medication. Some medications can cause dry eyes as a side effect. These medications include antihistamines, atropine, beta blockers, cancer medications, codeine, decongestant eye drops, decongestants, morphine, allergy medications, scopolamine, tranquilizers, and vitamin-A analogs. The artificial sweetener aspartame, excessive supplemental vitamin B3, and the recreational drug hashish can also cause dry eye.

Check your soft contact lenses. Soft contact lenses often promote the evaporation of tears from the surface of the eye. In severe dry eye cases, contact lenses cannot be worn.
