Allergies

In this part . . .

Your allergy tags along wherever you go — in your

kitchen, your grocery store, at work, at school, on

vacation . . . it even accompanies you on dinner dates and tells you what to order!

In this part, I show you how to apply the information you gathered at your doctor’s office to your day-to-day living so you can more fully enjoy your life. The chapters in this part feature savvy strategies and tips from the trenches (supplied by yours truly, food allergy doctor and patient) on how to cope with your food allergies at home, on the

road, in daycare, in preschool, and from kindergarten to your senior year in high school.

I also offer tips for parents of teens and tweens on how to encourage your children to take ownership of their food

allergies and assume more responsibility for their own

optimum health. Finally, I show you how to guesstimate

the odds of outgrowing a food allergy and let you in on

some tips that may improve your chances.

Chapter 10

Living at Home with Your Allergies

In This Chapter

ᮣ Ridding your house of allergenic foods

ᮣ Restocking the shelves with safer alternatives

ᮣ Brushing up on allergen-free cooking techniques

ᮣ Building your own information/emergency station

Agood part of the time you spend at home, family members are munch-ing on something. Whether they’re grabbing a snack or sitting down for a seven course meal, family members must work together to prevent allergenic foods from finding their way into the family member who has the food allergy.

In this chapter, you discover ways to convert your home into a safe haven for you or your loved one who has a food allergy. Here I discuss the pros and cons of eliminating problem foods from your home. If you choose to keep the problem foods around, I suggest ways of shelving and labeling them to avoid accidental exposure and cross contamination. I show you how to stock up on non-allergenic foods and ingredients, equip your medicine cabinet with effective allergy treatments, and build an information/emergency station that has everything you need to prevent reactions and quickly respond in the event of any reaction.

Dumping the Bad Stuff . . . or Not

When a family member has a severe food allergy, the natural impulse may be to purge the household of all foods that can possibly trigger a reaction. While that is certainly an option, other options are available, and only you and your family can decide which option is best.
