The Expeditions: The Estonian Experience

In Estonia, as mentioned earlier, the director of the archives, Oskar Loorits, escaped to Sweden just before the arrival of the USSR, and the archives were henceforth censored. Risto Järv of the Estonian Folklore Archives told me that “materials censored were not destroyed but remained in different place, so luckily we can see what was the censoring process. So they [Russians] wanted to continue folklore work but to change the old conceptions…. not to have folklore collected by people who left Estonia, not some part of folklore, and third part was that archive should collect and publish new kind of folklore, that is useful to the Soviet regime. So, we had to look for new kinds of materials like, socialistic proverbs.” Expeditions took place in Estonia too, and many materials were gathered.
