Whatâd just happened?
She clasped her arms to her stomach.
Tony disappeared around the back of the house. Should she go after him? Or stay here with the two crying wrecks in the front yard?
Tony needed a chance to cool off. With the way heâd attacked Craig, shook against her, and yelled at Craig, who knew what heâd do.
Tremors raced through her.
She needed to do something. Anything.
She took a couple of steps forward and touched Amandaâs arm.
Amanda let out a pathetic whimper.
âHere. Go on inside. Iâll help Craig in.â
Amanda gave a jerky nod, hands still covering her face, and darted for the front door.
Merri bent and gripped Craigâs arm. His shoulders shook, and blood and tears dripped onto the grass. She tugged on his arm, and he wavered to his feet.
With her help, he stumbled up the porch steps and into the house.
She released his arm and slammed the door behind him. Drove the deadbolt home. âYouâre a coward.â And heâd hurt Tony by his cowardice.
âI ...â Craig slumped against the wall. âPlease ...â
She turned from the door and clenched her teeth. If she didnât watch it, sheâd be hitting him and railing at him just like Tony. âYouâre bleeding on my carpet. Go into the kitchen. Iâll get a rag for your nose.â
He staggered toward the kitchen.
Amanda stood on the other side of the love seat and lowered her hands from her face. Shock and tears glazed her eyes.
Merri strode into the hallway, grabbed a rag from the closet, and walked into the kitchen.
Craig leaned against the counter, blood dripping onto his shoes and the floor.
She wet the rag and nudged a chair away from the kitchen table. âSit.â
He stumbled to the chair and collapsed into it, arms clasped to his ribs.
She dangled the rag in front of him. âLean forward and hold this to your nose.â
He did as sheâd said, hand shaking. Every few seconds, he gasped a breath.
Amanda slipped into the kitchen, lips parted and brows pulled together. âWhy, Craig? Why?â
He shook his head and pulled in another shallow breath. âI did it for you. For you and our baby. I couldnât ... couldnât let them kill you two. IâI couldnât.â
A shudder tore through her, and her gaze darted from him to Merri. âIâI ...â Her eyes widened. âHow could you do that?â The words burst from her and rattled through the kitchen. âHow could you apologize? Youâd done nothing wrong.â
Craig didnât so much as look at her. âGetâget packed. We canât stay here.â
Was he afraid Tony would kill him once he came back, or could he not stand to face him?
Tony. She shouldnât have let him go off on his own. That guy had hit him, had stood on his chest.
If not for the agents whoâd blocked both the front and back doors to keep her and Amanda from getting out ...
Oh, she shouldâve gone out a window.
No, if sheâd gotten out, sheâd have joined Tony on the ground.
Yet had the guy hurt him, further injured his arm?
âLeaving?â Amandaâs voice came shrill.
