ESTABLISHING ORDER ON THE INSIDE
Order starts from within: within the company, the department, the system, the process, and the person. It is possible to achieve the kind of order that allows you the freedom to live life on your own terms. There was a time when I felt proud of myself for making a good hire. I had looked for someone with charisma and charm, someone who could gain the staffâs trust and be a catalyst for positive change in the practice. It felt like the right fit at the outset, but over the course of time I realized it was not so good. Sometimes the people we put in leadership roles are there because we see them as they could be while ignoring the reality that they may never get there. They may never live up to the potential we see because weâve set them up for roles that may not align with the visions they have for themselves.
We must start with people first. When we hire new employees, their ability to follow processes, work deliberately toward a goal, and understand efficiency should be at the forefront of our criteria. Employees who do not have personalities capable of this type of thinking will derail your efforts toward systemization. If youâre looking at existing employees, this is the time to go back to the beginning and teach these concepts. You must design an organizational structure that includes people who embrace processes and understand their necessity for achieving efficiency. You must be able to identify the natural-born ORDER creators in your business and consider including this quality in their job description.
A perfect example of this is Mindsightâs former client care coordinator, Bubbly Britany. Britany is an amazing employee, one who will do absolutely anything you tell her to do. She will not question authority; she will smile, maybe giggle a little, and do what you ask. Well, thatâs how she used to be. Recently, Britany was promoted to human resources director because she demonstrated the skills, the talent, and the motivation to grow both professionally and personally. It wasnât until then that she went from Bubbly Britany to Badass Britany (a.k.a. BA Britany) because she was willing to step up, step out, and challenge herself to be better. Sheâs now being groomed for the highest-level position within our company, chief operating officer. She demonstrates a talent for training and recognizing inefficiencies, and has the confidence to speak up and challenge others. Sheâs always looking for a better way.
After a frustrating first attempt to create a business that would continue to run when key employees were unavailable, I realized it wasnât going to work; I just could never figure out why. After using the Fix This Next system, we realized it was because we werenât ready. I hadnât shored up the SALES and PROFIT levels so that my ORDER level could flourish. My team and I continued to be distracted. Every time we started the process of systemizing the practice, a catastrophe would occur that consumed all of our attention and resources.
