FUENTES’RESOURCES FOR FINDING WORK

In determining work after high school, Fuentes members did not directly use their school and work experience. Few Fuentes second- and third-generation members claimed that school provided the experiences that illuminated the types of work they wanted to do after high school. For males, these experiences came from industrial art classes. Samuel remembered how he was directed by a counselor to take industrial arts courses15 and later realized he liked doing things with his hands:

[The counselor said,] “Well, maybe you should take industrial or this.” Wood shop or things like that. . . . I liked industrial things because I always grew up using my head to try and make things, toys and games. I liked to work with my hands.
