Those receiving information must confirm with the communicator that they understand the communication before proceeding with their portion of the work, because in the social services sector, there is not enough time or resources to go off in the wrong direction. Once agreements are validated, two sides of accountability are formed. On one side is the person holding the other accountable. On the other side is the person trying to understand their accountabilities. If this loop is functioning effectively, both parties have shared goals and a clear sense of the consequences for doing things right or wrong.

I see starting the workday as an example of team collaboration with dual accountability. Once, in my organization, staff members started arriving later and later to work, which resulted in them missing important announcements during the morning huddle, information that was important to the team effort. As a result, senior leaders throughout the organization began taking attendance at the huddles and holding staff members accountable for tardiness. Several staff members were outraged at being tracked in this way, but for me it was less about following the rules and more about meeting a requirement for being part of the team and being an effective collaborator.

My reason for supporting these efforts for an on-time arrival were simple:

The organization’s hours of operation had not changed since any of these staff members had applied for a job with us, were selected for and accepted the job, and were onboarded as members of the team.

Our business hours were a promise made to the users of our services, which those users relied on.

Failing to come to work on time to deliver on that promise was an outcome that warranted consequences.
