African American families were too often casualties of the Civil War and the long years leading up to it, children sold away from their parents and marriages between enslaved men and women not recognized or respected. The utter disregard for the sanctity of slave families did not prevent them from forming and even from flourishing, as we would see in the case of the ancestors of the hip-hop artist Nasir Jones, the actor Angela Bassett, and the presidential advisor Valerie Jarrett. The relationships we found on the family trees of Nas, Angela, and Valerie, the connections we uncovered, were astounding in both their complexity and their endurance, often straddling the line between slavery and freedom.
