JULIA
The hay bale hit the ground mere feet from her feet, and Julia jumped back, letting out a tiny scream.
âSorry!â the man on the truck bed yelled.
She glanced up at him, muttering under her breath with a slight growl in her voice. âItâs not like you couldnât see me standing here.â
She glanced around at the different piles of hay bales. While most had been unloaded from the truck and were in piles around, there were still two truckloads waiting to be unloaded. Men walked in every direction, and with the maze plans in their hands, they pointed toward different areas of Murryâs fieldâthe location Wes secured from the local family for the maze site. Everyone had a job, and everyone had a section, and as the rest of the bales were unloaded in Juliaâs section, she yanked the plans out of her back pocket, glancing over them.
âIâm sure glad I took an allergy pill this morning,â her mother said, scratching her forehead. âWhat section are we doing again?â She glanced over Juliaâs shoulder, pointing at the piece of paper.
âThis corner. But we should wait until they create this line here.â She pointed toward the connecting outer wall and then toward several workers who were working on the wall. âThat way, we know we are in line.â
âSo, we are just supposed to wait?â Her motherâs eyes squinted from the sun as she looked around.
Julia nodded. âWe could eat lunch. Iâm starving.â
âMe too. I packed us some sandwiches. They are in a cooler in the car.â
They headed over to where her mother had parked, and while her mother got the cooler from the trunk, Julia grabbed a blanket from the back seat and laid it on the ground.
âSo, are you ever going to explain what that is all about?â Her mother pointed across the field toward Wes who was walking around with two women. Although he had tried to talk to Julia when she arrived to help, she had managed to avoid him.
Thankfully.
âI donât understand what you mean.â
âWho are they?â
âThe blond is his sister, Michelle, and the black-haired one is Monica, his ex-fiancée.â
Her motherâs head whipped around to face her. âHis what?â
âYou heard me.â Julia shot her a look as she reached for the cooler and opened the top, looking down inside before she reached in and pulled out the wrapped sandwiches.
âWhen did she get into town? And why is she here?â
âYesterday and I donât know. She showed up at the inn while I was there to go over the plans.â
âAnd what did he do?â
âWe were pretty much finished, so he went off to talk to her, and I left.â
Her motherâs mouth fell open. âAnd you didnât think to tell me because?â
Julia unwrapped her sandwich in her lap, taking her thumb to her lips to lick off a bit of mayonnaise. âI didnât think it was that important.â
Her mother glanced up at the sky. âShe didnât think it was important?â
âWho are you talking to when you do that?â
âWhoever will listen, which is God for one.
