The rest of the night consisted of discrete scenes, without any of the events that connected them remaining in his mind.
First, he was back with Lucien's platoon. His own platoon was also there, and what remained of the Chadian company. Malloum was there, but he didn't see de Murat anywhere.
They had all taken shelter behind the row of cars, now that there were no injured men in front of it. They were leaning over the bonnets, shooting at the German infantry, the shape of them nothing more than a dark shade in the desert. As far as Anatole could make out, the Germans were well protected behind some sort of wall; much better protected than they were, at any rate.
Then a blank, and he was opening the boot of a car, knowing what he'd find: a mortar, and the two rounds that remained. He didn't remember carrying it back to the line of fire, but he did remember the slow, dull realisation that he couldn't set up the mortar behind the cars, since the angle of the barrel would end up wrong.
Then someone was shouting that he would be killed. And, indeed, there were bullets hitting the car behind him, but since he was moving around a fair bit - stabilising the legs, loading the ammunition, moving the barrel - they didn't seem to be hitting him.
The next thing he remembered was the booming sound as the mortar rounds slammed into the German defenses.
He had a vague recollection of de Murat yelling at him and his platoon congratulating him, and a series of hands being slapped against his shoulders. But his next clear memory was after they had arrived at the camp at Gasr-el-Arid. He was in a tent, there was a bowl of water to wash in, and he was staring down into it, realising that the reason why the water was turning a rusty, cloudy colour was because Lucien's blood was all over his hands and arms.
He didn't remember anything after that.
