COST TO SOCIETY
As we know heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and it is estimated that about 17 percent of national health expenditures may be due to this disease. These costs may substantially increase due to increasing numbers of aging people (American Heart Association policy statement, 2011). As stated in the preface to this book, in 2010 the total medical cost of heart disease was $273 billion, and the indirect cost (due to lost productivity) was estimated to be about $172 billion. It is estimated that by 2030 40.5 percent of the population may suffer some form of heart disease. This would increase the direct cost to $818 billion and the indirect cost to $276 billion.
