Telecommunication standardization

Telecommunication Standardization

The telecommunication networks of the world work because of the high degree of standardization involved. Our dependence on the telephone grows with the need for more services to be offered through the telephone. The telephone network relies heavily on having a well-regulated system right from the terminal input on one end of the line, to the terminal output at the other end.

ITU - the International Telegraph Union, originally founded as the International Telegraph Union, saw inception in 1865. It became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1947. The International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (CCITT), was created in 1956. It was renamed ITU-T in 1993. It is a world-wide organisation which brings governments and industry together to coordinate the establishment and operation of global telecommunication networks and services. The ITU-T coordinates applicable standards for telecommunications globally on behalf of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Those standards are mainly associated with Information and Communications Technologies including fixed, mobile, radio, broadcast, internet, aeronautical and other areas. It also defines global telecommunication tariffs and accounting principles.

The ITU-T (for Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunications Union) is the primary international body for fostering cooperative standards for telecommunication equipments and systems. It is one of the three sectors of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). It coordinates standards for telecommunications. The Study Groups of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) assemble experts from around the world to develop international standards known as ITU-T Recommendations, which act as defining elements in the global infrastructure of information and communication technologies.

ETSI is recognized as an official European Standards Organisation by the European Union, enabling valuable access to European markets.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is an independent, non-profit, standardization organisation in the telecommunications industry.

The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), which meets every four years, establishes the topics for study by the ITU-T study groups which, in turn, produce recommendations on these topics.

The ITU-T G-Series Recommendations G.650–G.659, is meant for Optical fibre cables.

ITU-T G-Series Recommendations and CCITT

ITU -T Series - G deals with mainly Transmission Systems and Media, Digital Systems and Networks. ITU-T G Series are categorized as follows:

Land coaxial cable pairs G.620 – G.629

Submarine cables G.630 – G.639

Optical fibre cables G.650 – G.659

Characteristics of optical components and subsystems G.660 – G.699

Digital Terminal Equipments G.700 – G.799

Digital Networks G.800 – G.899

Digital Sections and Digital Line System G.900 – G.999

Quality of Service and Performance – Generic and User-related Aspects G.1000 – G.1999

Transmission Media Characteristics G.6000 – G.6999

Data over Transport – Generic Aspects G.7000 – G.7999

Packet over Transport Aspects G.8000 – G.8999

Access Networks G.9000 – G.9999

THE INTERNATIONAL TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE

In 1956, the ITU, a special agency of the United Nations having its headquarters in Geneva, and constituted as two different bodies - namely the CCIF (Consultative Committee for International Telephony) and the CCIT (Consultative Committee for International Telegraphy) - were joined to create the CCITT to manage telephone and telegraph communications more effectively.

In 1993, the ITU-T was formed to function as the ITU’s Telecommunications Standardization Sector.
