What appears to be another dispute with Aneurin Davies was settled in September 1972. The details were not recorded except to say that the sum of £1,200 covered all claims arising from the 1968 order.

Meeting on 17 November 1972 and discussing the 1973 budget, the directors continued to express their concern about the trend for the margin between wages and revenue to reduce over the past three years. What was wanted was fewer but better-paid staff and more volunteers. Throughout the 1970s there was agitation from some employees for their wages to be improved, to achieve parity with British Rail. This must have been partially triggered by a feeling that the company had more money available since the CEGB award had been made, but also by inflation, which reached 24.89 per cent in 1975. Such high levels also had an effect on the value of the company’s cash reserves, of course. The directors were not prepared to consider a 25 per cent increase, to achieve parity with BR’s basic rates, which would bring them into conflict with the Government’s pay restraint policy. They did, however, decide to set up a company pension scheme.

Constructed by the company’s building department, the extension was designed by Eddie Jones, a volunteer who was an architect for one of the national banking chains. The public areas were finished in 1976, when the café was named the Little Wonder. The offices were finished the following year.
