The 2016 #NiUnaMenos (not one woman less) demonstrations in Argentina were sparked by daily reports of violence against women. Activists argue that part of the problem is a macho culture, but some say rising levels of violence against women are a backlash against educational and political gains women have made.

Women first started marching through cities in torchlit night-time processions in the 1970s to “reclaim the night.” They are still marching today, to demand the right for women to feel safe on the streets at night and to protest wider issues of violence against women.
