Write Fearlessly
Here’s a simple meditation practice for the next time you worry about whether the story you’re writing is any good. Find a chair someplace reasonably quiet. Sit with your feet flat on the floor. Now—and this is important—rest your arms such that your hands aren’t touching anything, not your legs or the chair. Your hands should be suspended in air.
Now close your eyes and take five deep breaths. After the last breath, focus your attention on your hands. Notice how you can feel them even though they are not touching anything, even though there is nothing physical to tell you they exist other than the pulsing energy in them. Focus on your hands in this way for two minutes, and then open your eyes. You should feel calmer.
As I said, I do not think of my physical brain as the source of my intelligence. But I have found the body to be an incredibly useful tool for calming my mind. Unlike the mind, which, through the miracle of the imagination, can travel into memories of the past and the theoretical future, the body can only exist in the here and now. To focus on your body, on your breathing, your hands, or even your feet on the floor, is to summon your mind back to the present moment, where writing and living actually occur.
