Figure 9 Wir schaffen das neue Deutschland! Denkt an die Opfer-Wählt Nationalsozialisten Liste 1 [We create the New Germany! Think of the victims, Vote National Socialist List 1], 1932, courtesy of the Bundesarchiv, Plak 002-042-108/Artist: Hermann Witte.
The solid, square-jawed SA man continued to appear, although in something of a new form; as in a January 1933 poster (Figure 10: Trotz Hass und Verbot Nicht Tot [“Notwithstanding hate and interdiction, [we’re] not dead”]). The overall message of the image seeks to convey that despite the ban on the SA and the measures placed against the organization, it was still very much alive and willing to defend Germany against internal enemies. The size of the Stormtrooper by comparison to the other figures in the image furnishes the impression of strength and superiority, despite technically being the victim of repressive measures. The SA man is standing in a purposeful pose, fists clenched, looking sternly at a series of caricatured individuals that are designed to represent the “real” enemies of National Socialism. It is clear to see that the artist has constructed the entire image around the already-founded fear associated with the SA. Artistically, the enemies depicted in the image (moving from left to right) include the SPD, the KPD, the Centre Party, and the Bavarian People’s Party. These supposed real enemies of Germany are placing a series of symbolic rocks in the path of the SA man so as to block any further progress by the party. But to no avail. What is additionally notable is the way in which the enemies have been drawn to display a strong sense of fear of the SA man. All of the representatives, apart from the Centre Party who has for lack of a better term been caught red handed, are either cowering or retreating away or completely denying responsibility. In Either case, none of them have backs turned toward the SA man. This not only paints the SA in an authoritative light but also seeks to portray the SA as a group to be feared.
