I don’t know what it cost to treat Trip Casscells’s cancer or little Robin Bush’s leukemia.* What I do know is that we’ve never accurately “scored” the value of treatments, the research behind them, and the lives they enable. They score zero according to the government system, which gives no credit to those lives’ achievements or the people they motivated.

It’s time we stopped thinking about research and treatment as just a cost. Let’s also look at the social benefits side of the ledger. Consider the millions of cancer patients who were once expected to die and who now live full, meaningful lives. They would fill every Major League Baseball stadium several times over. We all gain something when these lives are extended and enhanced. It’s not just the added productivity in the economy, but also the human impact on family, friends, and caregivers.

The best investments we can make are in each other.
