REAR VIEW, VICTORIAN HOUSES, 2017. Well-defined concrete, stone-lined, and wooden pathways in front of and behind the houses lead to various parts of the island. Seabird nesting density is so thick, pathways must be used to avoid stepping on or disturbing nests, eggs, and chicks during nesting season. (Photograph by Bill Dewey; SCIF.)

CEMENT RAIN CATCHMENT SLAB, 2017. With no potable springs on Southeast Farallon Island’s 95 acres, a large cement catchment was built on the island’s marine terrace to capture rainwater that ran into two 43,000-gallon, dome-topped cisterns. The water was filtered and pumped into a gravity tank on the hill behind the houses. This system is abandoned. (Photograph by Bill Dewey; SCIF.)
