Specific motives for small and large families

The six men and women who have been quoted above, cover in their comments most of the things which middle (and lower) class people have to say about their preference for a small, medium, or large family. The combinations in which the various views are put differ greatly from couple to couple, but these six reflect the dominant attitudes. In chapter 5 we examined the rationales offered by men and women for why different people might prefer families of different sizes. Do the rationales that are offered vary depending on how many children the respondent wants? The tables below indicate that for men there is considerable variation; for women the variation is much less because women seem better able to put themselves in the shoes of those who want different numbers of children. That is, women who want large families are better able than men with similar preferences to understand what motivates the person who wants a small family and vice versa.
