Chapter 14

On Monday morning, as soon as she had returned from dropping Molly off at school, Emma plopped down into her office chair and powered up her computer with a lump in her throat.

Yesterday, she had penned a very polite “I quit” e-mail, and since then, she had deliberately stayed away from her in-box, not wanting to spoil the weekend by checking to see if—and what—D.C. Pane had replied.

She sat there for a few seconds, fiddling with a pen, before she worked up the courage to open Outlook. Her fingers tightened around the mouse as she waited for her e-mails to download.

With a ping, several new e-mails materialized in her in-box.

Emma bit the end of her pen. She wanted to close the program and go back to bed. Oh, come on. Be a woman. She forced herself to take a closer look.

Three of the e-mails were from other clients, giving instructions on projects they wanted her to do. She dragged those into her to-do folder.

The next one was from Chloe. Great. Now they were down to exchanging e-mails. She opened it.

It was an apology for missing her every-other-day phone call to Molly yesterday. Well, it wasn’t her that Chloe needed to apologize to, and she told her ex-wife that in no uncertain terms. She wasn’t in the mood to mince words.

The next e-mail was from her friend Lori, carrying the subject line How’s it going with your hot neighbor?

Emma groaned. Lori had sent her messages like that since she had first told her about her new neighbor. She ignored it for now.

The e-mail below Lori’s was marked high priority—and the sender was D.C. Pane.

The mouse arrow hovered over the e-mail for several seconds before she found the courage to click on it.

Bracing herself, she started to read.
