CHARLOTTE

Tom was on his way to pick me up. We were having a late lunch with his family, and I offered to make a salad. I was pretty proud of myself. I’d nailed the recipe Pam shared with me.

I was looking forward to spending time with Tom and his folks. I’d gotten the feeling that something was bothering Tom. He wasn’t his easy self. I didn’t want to push–I figured he’d talk to me if and when he wanted to share.

I was relieved that the effects of the stomach bug had passed. I felt myself again after a few weeks of throwing up every bloody day. I was so happy that I celebrated by stuffing my face with food. It showed too because my pants were tighter than usual. Perhaps it was because I was so in love. Whatever the reason, I’d have to slow down, or soon I’d roll into work.

“Hey, beautiful,” Tom said when he arrived at my apartment. “Are you ready to go?”

“Hi. Yes, all good.”

He came over and put his arms around me.

“You look good enough to eat,” he grinned and kissed me.

“Oh, no, you don’t. We’ll be late if you start your shenanigans.”

“Oh, alright. Is that Pam’s salad?”

“It is. I hope it’s as good as hers.”

“It looks amazing. Gorgeous and a salad queen. How did I get so lucky?” he teased.

“Let’s get going, Mr. Lucky.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing Arielle,” I said once we were on the road.

“Me too. She’s all Bryce talks about these days. I think my brother is completely smitten.”

“And what about you?” I teased.

“Hopelessly. Besides, we can’t have the French pipping the English, can we?”

“Of course not.”

I waited for a while and then I couldn’t help myself.

“Are you okay, Tom?”

“Sure. Why do you ask?”

“You seem distracted. More so than usual, I mean. Anything wrong?”

“Oh, I didn’t realize I was. Sorry.”

“No, please, don’t apologize. What I’m trying to say is, I’m here if you need to talk.”

Tom took my hand and gave me the most beautiful, warm smile.

“Thank you, Charlotte. That means more to me than you could ever know. I’m fine, though, my love.”

I chose to believe Tom. I had no reason not to do so. I was being oversensitive–not an emotion I was used to, or particularly enjoyed.

The house was noisy when we arrived. It was a full house, with Tom’s family, Arielle, Slade, Pam, and me. Alex and Cleo, my newest furry friends also copped an invite. The Coopers had recently lost their family pet after fifteen years of best friend magic, so the golden retriever teens were warmly received.

“Hi, guys,” Tom said as he and I arrived. “Wow, it feels like old times,” he said excitedly.

“Darlings,” his mom said, happily. “It’s times like these I miss the joy of having a home filled with dirty noises running about, chased by dogs and gardeners.”

“Dirty noises?” I asked.

“Yes, that’s Mom’s definition of young boys–noise with dirt on it.”

“That’s precious,” I laughed.

“And very true,” Harmony smiled. “You’ll understand once you have children.
