Subsequent suggestions that Spicer was referring to television viewership as well as in-person attendance of Trump's inauguration are also refuted by the easily discoverable history of U. S. Presidential inauguration broadcasts, which attracted 41 million viewers for Ronald Reagan's inauguration in 1981, 38 million viewers for Barack Obama in 2009, and 33 million for Richard Nixon in 1973, in comparison to 31 million for Trump in 2017 (see Gorman, 2017, for more details).

Meanwhile, an experiment reported in 2015, but receiving little coverage in the real news media, suggests that, contrary to current concerns, people may not put that much stock or belief in fake news after all, even it agrees with their opinions. Bullock et al (2015) conducted experiments which showed that "small payments for correct and 'don’t know' answers sharply diminish the gap between Democrats and Republicans in responses to 'partisan' factual questions". In other words, partisan news bubbles were punctured by even a small potential financial inducement -- correct or "don't know" answers putting respondents in a pool where they had just a one-in-a-hundred chance of winning a $200 Amazon gift certificate. Given such a motive, Democrats and Republicans by and large agreed on what was true and what was not, regardless of their political differences.
