ZEKE WATCHED THROUGH the dining room window as Dee parked her car. He smirked to himself. She’d always been an impatient girl, even when they were kids. Nothing much had changed in that area. Her father had told him LaDonna needed, a strong man and he was that man. He’d made plans and he had a few lessons he had to teach her.

His Dee adored her father and Reverend Miller adored her, but he had told Zeke LaDonna needed a firm hand or she’d run all over him. He took the man’s advice to heart.

He knew she had avoided his mother even after he’d told her things were fine which was why he’d insisted that she come to dinner. He smirked to himself now thinking about how he’d hung up in Willoughby’s face once again. He’d called Zeke back, but Zeke had put his phone on mute.

He opened the front door and Dee smiled nervously at him.

“Come on in,” he said opening the storm door. He shut the door behind her and took her hand. “We’re eating in the dining room.” Zeke led her into the kitchen where his mother was standing by the stove.

She turned around to face them giving Dee a smile. “Hello, LaDonna.”

“Hi, Miss. Black,” she said quietly not meeting her eyes.

“Dinner is ready. Let’s go into the dining room,” Rosa said.

Zeke sat Dee right beside him as his mother sat at the head of the table.

Mama Rosa said the blessing as they held hands and then looked up.

“Let’s address the elephant in the room so that we can enjoy our meal,” Rosa said looking from Zeke to Dee.

Zeke squeezed Dee’s hand giving her a smile of encouragement.

“Now LaDonna, Zeke told me that he lured you here into the house and that it was his aggressive behavior that led to the unfortunate incident I walked in on,” Rosa said. “He apologized to me and all is forgiven.”

“I-I’m sorry also,” Dee said looking up from her empty plate.

“Well, I accept your apology,” Rosa said nodding. “Now, I’m not so old that I don’t understand strong passions between two people in love.” She stared at Zeke. “However, there will be no sex under my roof without matrimony, understood?” She picked up the bowl of fried chicken and handed it to Zeke. “I know that you being a respectable girl, a preacher’s daughter you both understand this.”

“Yes ma’am,” they both said in unison.
