Chapter Ten

“MORGAN? SUGAR? Do you know where I put that book on cursed stones?” Max was still researching for Poe, hoping his old buddy called him back soon.

“Is that the one with the Hope Diamond? I think it’s in the bathroom….” Morgan wandered through the room, paint in his hair, wearing nothing but a pair of gym shorts.

Max raised an eyebrow, looking at that skinny-assed body in a very admiring way. “What are you up to?”

“I’m painting a mural in the dining room.” Like it was the most logical thing ever.

“Ah. What kind?” He hoped it wasn’t fish. Those buggy eyes kind of creeped him out.

“London. Sort of. It’ll be a little interpretive. What’s with the spooky rocks, Max? Are we going to have to go rescue Poe?”

“Not if I can’t find out where he is.” Damn that Poe and not telling him shit. “He asked about haunted rubies.”

“Rubies….” Morgan stopped, forehead creasing. “Like the Balas rubies? Or Kennedy’s ruby? There was that weird-assed Chinese dragon one that the Scot wanted. The Cote de Bretagne wasn’t really a ruby, would it count?” Christ, Morgan was like a font of weird-ass shit.

“Chinese dragon and a Scot?” That sounded weird enough for Poe. “What about it?”

“There was this guy—some low-level landowner over in the UK but a biggie-wow dude in the Old West over here. He spent a lot of money to buy this stone that was supposed to have a dragon inside it. The Chinese sent a bunch of guys over with it, but they went Donner party in the Rockies, and it was lost. The Scot went crazy, they say, lost all his fortune and ended up with his throat slit at some whorehouse.”

“How do you know this shit?” Hell, he was supposed to be the geologist.

“I like spooky shit; makes for great stories when you’re busking or auditioning.”

“Yeah, but what’s the key to disarming the ruby?” That would be what Poe needed.

“Don’t know if there is one. I mean, taking it out of China obviously sucked ass. Maybe it needs to be left alone.”

Right. Like Poe was going to leave a big-assed ruby alone.

“Hmm. Well, I’ll go from there, at least. Thanks, sugar. Now, c’mere.”

“Hmm?” Morgan wandered closer, the bright blue streak in one of those dark eyes still the most fascinating thing he’d ever seen.

So damned fine. He was the luckiest fucker on earth. “I’ve got a reward for you, honey.”

“I like rewards….” Morgan straddled his thighs, fingers on his cheeks.

“Mmm. Even if it interrupts your painting?” Damn, he loved the way Morgan’s skin felt under his hands. Like silk.

“I can paint when you get busy again.” Morgan arched for him, little piercings shining in the light.

“Okay… I can handle that.” He could handle Morgan too, his hands cupping that sweet ass, pulling his lover closer.

Which was when the damned phone rang, shrill and shocking.

“Let me guess, you have to answer, huh?”

Little asshole.

“Yeah. It could be Poe. You hold that thought, sugar.” And hold on to him, because he had to get up.
