Taylor stood still in the hallway, a rock that other students streamed around, worried that she had done something wrong, worried that she was getting in over her head, worried that Taffy had lost interest now that she had gotten what she wanted. She put a hand over her heart. She just needed to try harder, find out what she could do to please her, to make Taffy like her again.

The lunch bell rang and Taffy headed outside, toward her favorite knoll.

Overboard stepped in front of her in the hallway. “Not so fast, young lady. The school is inspecting all alien lunches, a.k.a. those brought into the school from outside.”

Taffy tightened her brows and held her lunch cooler closer. “Since when?”

“Since today.” He gave her a tight, fake smile and held out his hand for the lunch.

“You know what?” She pushed the lunch into his hands. “Just keep it.”

“Also, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the school―”

The school. As though the school were a sentient, evil entity unto itself. Just blame it on the school. People liked to hide behind institutions and shirk their own responsibility. Taffy had nothing but contempt for this, and Overboard was the poster boy for it.

“―has installed an extra layer of security on the classroom doors.”

She hoped that Taylor would be proud of her for holding her tongue again. It was a new thing she was trying, and she deserved a damn merit badge for it.

“We found that classrooms were being accessed off-hours, and not through the proper channels.” Overboard puffed out his chest. Taffy thought he could do with a training bra.

“Moreover, I will be personally approving all purchases made by the science department. Our records show some suspicious activity.”

Taffy inched away until she had reached a clearance where gosh, this crowd of students just carried me off with them.

She was grateful to disappear into the mass of other students, though usually she would hate that. This was her last year with them. She wouldn’t be in this space-time configuration again, and one day, this would be in the past. Other people would be streaming down the same hallway, and there would be a new Overboard in her life, somewhere, trying to stop her from doing what she wanted to do, maybe for no other reason than they just didn’t like her or they resented her or felt threatened by her.
