4.4. Phonological phrasing and the processes of externalization

As discussed in the previous section, f is the label in { f, R}, where f is a functional element and R is a root (see (18)). This indicates that f is active while R is inert in syntactic computation. Thus, f drives the computation not only by serving as a label but also by inducing agreement, licensing Case, and providing a landing site of movement, among other functions, while R is more or less dependent on what f does. By contrast, previous work indicates that function words are invisible, while content words are visible, in the computation of post-syntactic phonology (Chomsky and Halle 1968: 366; Selkirk 1984: 337; Truckenbrodt 1999: 226). Thus, Selkirk (1984: 337) proposes the following condition (here “rules” refer to phonological rules):

(23) The Principle of the Categorial Invisibility of Function Words

“Rules making crucial appeal to the syntactic category of the constituents to which they apply are blind to the presence of function word constituents.”
