A War on Two Fronts

Barely two years after agreeing to Germany’s nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union, Hitler rescinded the agreement and decided to attack Russia. The goal of this invasion was allegedly twofold: on the one hand, it was a fight against Communism and its spread across the globe; on the other, it was a means of “regaining” lost territory—a bid for more Lebensraum.

On June 22, 1941, at dawn on the shortest night of the year, a behemoth artillery barrage lined up along the Russian border, with some three million German soldiers about to invade the Soviet Union along a front of over one thousand miles. Backed up by an additional half million troops from Romania, among other German allied nations, they stormed into Russia at numerous points between Finland and the Black Sea with 3,600 tanks, 600,000 motorized vehicles, and 700,000 field guns. Assisted by well over one thousand aircraft, the assembled armed forces represented, at the time, the largest invasion force in history.
